Or, A Brief History of Fishability Alaska

Hi. My name is Jack Finnegan. I live in Ketchikan, Alaska.
For the past dozen years, I have been a wildlife guide and charter fishing captain on the ocean waters surrounding Ketchikan. In 2020, when Covid closed off the cruise ship season, I had a good deal of extra time on my hands.
One sunny June morning that year, on a day when I would normally be taking people out fishing, I sat idle in my apartment, sipping coffee and wondering what the future might hold. It was clear to me that I wanted to continue taking people out on the water—I love getting out there, and I thrive on sharing this place with visitors.
But it also occurred to me that for many travelers, oceangoing excursions are not always accessible. In my professional life, I've had numerous jobs working in the service of people with disabilities, from kids to seniors. Why shouldn't everyone have access to these adventures? Maybe I could build an operation that aimed to make such outings more available to everyone...
About a year later, on my way home from the grocery store, I heard a radio ad announcing the impending deadline for a business competition called the Path to Prosperity. There was a prize of $25,000 up for grabs! I remembered my business idea, and wondered if it had any prospects.
I mentioned this ad to my partner Brie, who encouraged me to apply. Next thing I know:
September, 2021: I am fully enmeshed in the Spruce Root Business Boot Camp.
February, 2022: I am awarded a $25,000 prize for my business concept! (One week later, Brie and I close on the purchase of our house. One week after that, we get married. It was a very busy and a very happy month.)
March, 2022: My business is awarded $1800 and a "Peoples' Choice" Award at the Innovation Summit in Juneau.
October, 2022: My business is awarded $2000 and another "Peoples' Choice" Award at the Alaska Travel Industry Association convention in Sitka.
December, 2022: Our son Patrick is born.
2023 is dedicated to securing financing for a very expensive, customized vessel.
2024: Construction on the boat begins!
2025 will be our inaugural season!
In the months leading up to May, 2025, I've got a million decisions to make. I'll be using this space to let you all know how things are going.
Thanks for visiting. Be sure to reach out if you have thoughts or suggestions!
Warm regards,
Captain Jack
